Northamptonshire Police was found to be adequate or better in several areas including workforce well-being support, use of powers, prevention, safeguarding and custody, but inadequate at investigating crime and requiring improvement in leadership and responding to the public.

Causes of concern

  • The force isn't always achieving appropriate outcomes for victims of crime, with low positive outcome rates particularly for rape, robbery and violence with injury, inconsistent allocation of investigations to suitably trained investigators, and insufficient accountability for investigative quality.

Areas for improvement

  • The force needs to speed up implementation of a new operating model to improve how it manages demand.
  • The force has access to good quality data and analytical support but needs to strengthen its use of this to improve decision-making.
  • Strategic governance arrangements are in place but the force must ensure stronger tactical implementation and leadership accountability.
  • The force needs to better understand the well-being challenges that demand and workloads create.
  • The force needs to consistently record and evaluate day-to-day problem-solving and share learning.
  • The force needs to attend calls for service in line with its published attendance times and make sure it updates callers if there are delays.

Set by the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Northamptonshire. It is published under the name Safe and Sound. It covers fire and rescue as well as policing. Stated aim: Make Northamptonshire Safe and Sound.

Visible, Accessible Community ServicesNeighbourhood policing to be revived and fire stations rooted in their areas, with services easier to reach and harm prevented before it happens.
Professionalism and standardsEthical leadership set by those at the top, with a workforce that mirrors its communities and gives the public a high standard of service.
