Northamptonshire Promotion Board Preparation

If you’re preparing for a Sergeant, Inspector or Chief Inspector board at Northamptonshire, your panel already knows your force’s inspection picture. Here’s what that means for you, and how State6 builds it into your preparation.

Northamptonshire HMICFRS snapshot

Most recent PEEL inspection: 2025-27 PEEL assessment

Northamptonshire Police was found to be adequate or better in several areas including workforce well-being support, use of powers, prevention, safeguarding and custody, but inadequate at investigating crime and requiring improvement in leadership and responding to the public.

PEEL grades

  • Custody: adequate
  • Workforce: adequate
  • Leadership: requires improvement
  • Police powers: good
  • Managing fraud: adequate
  • Preventing crime: adequate
  • Investigating crime: inadequate
  • Responding to public: requires improvement
  • Protecting vulnerable: adequate

Causes of concern

  • The force isn't always achieving appropriate outcomes for victims of crime, with low positive outcome rates particularly for rape, robbery and violence with injury, inconsistent allocation of investigations to suitably trained investigators, and insufficient accountability for investigative quality.

Areas for improvement

  • The force needs to speed up implementation of a new operating model to improve how it manages demand.
  • The force has access to good quality data and analytical support but needs to strengthen its use of this to improve decision-making.
  • Strategic governance arrangements are in place but the force must ensure stronger tactical implementation and leadership accountability.
  • The force needs to better understand the well-being challenges that demand and workloads create.
  • The force needs to consistently record and evaluate day-to-day problem-solving and share learning.
  • The force needs to attend calls for service in line with its published attendance times and make sure it updates callers if there are delays.

What this means for your board

A promotion board at Northamptonshire isn’t only assessing whether you can lead a team. It’s assessing whether you understand the force you’re asking to lead in, and where your leadership fits its priorities. Officers who connect their examples to what Northamptonshire is actually focused on stand out. Officers who stay inside their own team don’t.

You don’t do this by quoting the inspection report. You do it by letting your force’s priorities shape the decisions in your answers. If you want the full method, read our guide on what HMICFRS grades mean for your promotion board.
