How getting into the police works
1. Pick a route and apply to a force. You do not need a degree. The main routes are the Police Constable Entry Programme, the degree apprenticeship and the degree holder programme, and every one leads to the same job on the same pay. The entry routes guide sets them side by side.
2. Pass the sift, then sit the College online assessment.After your force checks eligibility you complete a sift, either the national one (a situational judgement test and a behavioural styles questionnaire) or your force's own. Then every applicant in England and Wales sits the same national assessment: a competency based interview of five recorded questions, a written exercise and a briefing exercise, all marked against the Competency and Values Framework at Level 1. 3. Know what you are being marked on. The assessors are not looking for policing stories. They are looking for five behaviours, shown in examples from any part of your life. CVF Level 1 explained sets out each one in plain terms.
4. Pass your force's own checks. If you pass the assessment your force takes over: vetting, a medical, the fitness test, and at nearly every force an interview of its own before the offer. Then a start date. What you earn from day one is in the police pay guide.

Is this official?
No. State6 is independent and built by serving police officers. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the College of Policing or any police force.
Do I need policing experience to apply?
No. Applicants are assessed at CVF Level 1, the standard for new recruits. Everyday examples from work, education, volunteering or home life carry just as much weight as anything policing related.
How much does it cost?
